31, 2002: HAPPY NEW YEAR !
(
Have fun and don't drink and drive. )
> We are going to have a nice home-cooked
meal tonight and enjoy the comforts of home. Living in the central
time zone, I think it's lame how they delay the new york celebration
in order to air it at midnight here. I mean, couldn't we all just
get it over with an hour early and get right to bed? Sheesh.
> The man made dinner for me last night. Grilled cheese sandwiches
and soup! It was delicious on a rainy cold night.

> I was lucky enough to sit in a mini
over the holidays. My dad's minister bought one and agreed to give
me a spin -- his was "british racing green" with a white
top. One of the coolest features was the stereo controls located
on the backside of the steering wheel where your fingers naturally
rest. They really aren't that expensive....

>
I'm back.
The illness: I had a nice visit back home, seeing my family.
The only bummer was waking up at 4:30 Christmas morning, and it
wasn't because i thought i heard santa on the rooftop. I got right
up, went into the bathroom and started thowing up. If my stepmother
hadn't been there with that cold washcloth on my neck and the ponytail
holder, i don't think that i would have lived to post this blog
entry. I have never been that ill. It's one of those terrible things
that you go through and you find yourself wanting to tell the story
over and over again and you just can't help the urge to retell it.
So, allow me to continue....um....got sick again at 7am and again
at 2pm. Bring on the ginger ale. We opened some presents in my sick
room that day and finished the rest when I was fully recovered on
friday. I am super glad to be healthy and feeling like myself again.
I hope I don't get a virus like that for at least 10 years. Ugh.
The results:
Since,
my santa list was posted, i feel obliged
to report the outcome. I got the flannel flower sheets and slept
on them last night for the first time. They are the softest things
ever. Seriously. For real. They are also the cutest ever. I
am happy to have such soft and cute sheets. What a treat. I also
got a computer drawing tablet (haven't tried out yet), a set of
markers, a nice scarf, ice age and monsters inc on DVD, hot rollers,
and tons of other nice gifts that I don't deserve.
The treats: We all know that christmas is about food and
not about presents. Here's my rundown of eating highlights: Krispy
Kreme Glazed Doughnut, Hardee's
Bacon and Egg Biscuit (a childhood favorite), Auntie
Anne's Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel at the Austin airport, Caramel
and Chocolate covered apple while Christmas shopping, Chicken
and Dumplings and some ham leftover from Christmas day. That cinnamon
pretzel is number 2 on my list of best treats (number 1 being Cinnabon).

> My favorite time of year, is the time
of year when nothing is happening. When I get past new years and
I gaze at my calendar and I see an endless bounty of empty, unplanned
weekends. That's my favorite -- not that I'm doing bad here now,
sitting at my desk, not doing much work, gnawing on this mini-chocolate
pecan pie that one of my workmates gave me and counting the hours
until vacation starts. I'm not saying these are bad times. But I
DO look forward to nothing. Nothing is best for painting.

> I have been thinking that it would be
a good idea to have a timeline of my life. I would like to
be able to look at a document and see the events of the years. (Maybe
this is to supplement my less-than-spectacular memory.) Mainly,
I want to document travels, jobs, moves, birthday celebrations,
and that sort of thing. For now, it will live as a word document.
I managed to outline the year 2002 and 2001 without much difficulty...we'll
see how much further back I can fill in by looking at old calendars.
I'll do what I can with the past and then try to keep up moving
forward.
> I was trying on jeans at the gap today and couldn't help but
think of this perfect quote from Margaret
Barry's fashion part I series ( i linked these articles 12-11,
but we all know that you didn't go read every single one of them,
even though you should have):
"Jeans
Pull them on; glance in the mirror. If your ass doesnt look
antigravitational in these jeans, if it doesnt look like some
other womans ass entirely, put them back.... (snip)"

> Growing up, a friend of mine always did
a gingerbread house decorating party around Christmas. It was lots
of fun; drinking hot cider and making candy houses. We used graham
crackers for the house and then used various candies to decorate
with. I'm going to try my hardest to do this next year, either by
myself or with friends. I
asked my dad to get me a decorating kit for christmas this year,
so that should come in handy for next.

> Dear Doctor's Office, If you're
going to put up a tree and only have 4 ornaments on it, just don't
bother. No one's Christmas spirits will be lifted by your sad, neglected,
dusty tree. Sincerely, Patient
> I have a few things to say about instant oatmeal. If you're
using the packets and you're following the directions on the package
to prepare it, you're doing it all wrong. Go ahead and add your
hot water, but you MUST toss it in the microwave for about 30 seconds
to make it good. The oatmeal cooks a bit and its a whole new situation.
Trust me.
> FYI: Kinkos has a new 'pay-at-the-pump' set-up for the self
service copiers. I haven't actually tried it out, just heard about
it while i was there last night.

> It was pot o' lucks here at work today.
I scored with a ham croissant sandwich, some kettle potato chips
and a slice of apple pie.
> I was at the container store the other day, wandering around.
They sell something there called, "bookends." Apparently,
you use them to hold up books on your bookshelves. They were modern
looking and only $9.99 for a set, so I bought some. This seems rather
convenient over my method of, "Where's something heavy?"

a guest to wear black....ahem), and much much more. Check it out

I've seen the Marshimaro character around and seen the little plunger
and toilet that often accompany him and wondered what the story
was. The Korean girl that I work with has a Marshimaro emergency
brake cover in her car, as well as a steering wheel and stick shift
cover. She began telling me that a korean guy developed the rabbit
and then later, a Japanese company bought the character and gave
him the name, Marshimaro. Still with me? I was asking her specifically
about the plunger and the toilet and she said that he uses his poo
to fight with....(pause). Here is a link
to his site with 8 delightful flash shorts. Episode 5 is particuarly
odd. I asked Korean Girl what that thing poking out of the water
was, and she said a peach, or maybe a flower and she didn't know
the English word for the specific type of flower that she was thinking
of.
> In the introduction section for Mero, the copy says, "Sometimes
I'm angry to meet excessively nice people, without reason. But if
I stare at the nice persons' eyes, I became angrier about myself."
Yeah, ditto.

day.....I love ham.

> Just when I think I've totally escaped,
someone else decides to cover the worst song ever and it comes back
around into circulation. "....They paved paradise and put up
a parking lot." Ok, I guess the song is called Big
Yellow Taxi and was written by Joni Mitchell -- covered by Bob
Dylan, Amy Grant, Counting Crows, Shawn Colvin, Green Day, Janet
Jackson, Vanessa Carlton, just to name a few. I heard it being played
in the background of a preview for Maid in Manhattan. That song
could ruin an otherwise perfectly terrible romantic comedy.
> I just realized that Christmas is two weeks from tomorrow.

> I always forget how much I love mexican
folk art, until i visit one of those shops and see all those tiny,
colorful, detailed dioramas and figures. Is it too late to be reborn
as a mexican folk artist and spend all day eating beans and making
clay adam
and eve scenes? I typed it into google this morning, and found
that there's a mexicanfolkart.com.
I love when that happens. On many sections, like the clay
page, they have photos of the artists and their work. How could
you not want a devil
with a woman on his knee and random insects?

Dreaming of a Brown Christmas
> I saw some 'dirty' snowmen in target.
Little stuffed things with brown looking stains. They are shooting
for some sort of nature feel with it, but it came out all wrong.

> This is a character that me and my friend made up in about
5th or 6th grade.

That's good stuff. The popcorn is covered with butter/toffee (crunch)
and then covered with chocolate (sweet). Tis a season of eating.

I may have seen Lance during lunch on 360 with a pack of about 7
USPS-clad cyclists, being closely followed by a USPS van. It was
a bit hard to tell, passing at 55mph, but I'm pretty sure it was
him.

I just love this Pig
Face mask from Opane...that's
a must have for h-ween next year. A friend told me about the Opane
site.
> Piyo Piyo was the first japanese character that i really
liked. I don't usually see much of it around, but Opane has more
Piyo than you can shake a stick at (right, silvershoe?) Like this
bank
for instance.
Cinnamon Toast: Underated Sweet Snack
> There is no better or quicker or tastier or easier treat than
the old-fashioned cinnamon toast. The ingredients always seem to
be at hand: Bread. Butter. Cinnamon. Sugar. If you're like me and
you're on the ball, you probably already have a supply of cinnamon
and sugar mixed up and ready to go in a handy shaker. As I think
about cinnamon toast, I quickly recall the best that I ever had,
at a small corner cafe in San Francisco. This
place was mainly a place to grab your coffee or a sandwich for lunch;
nothing fancy by any stretch. It was a block from the office where
I was working for the week. The thick slices of bread were toasted
in the broiler so that they were crunchy on the top where the sugar
carmelized, butter melted and the bread browned and still soft on
the bottom. A beautiful contrast of textures. They would wrap the
slices up in foil. I will never forget that cinnamon toast. I'd
pick cinnamon toast over chocolate anything anyday. The toaster
oven is really the best way to make it. The regular toaster doesn't
measure up because you have to add the butter and sugar after the
toast is made and by the time you do that, the bread is on its way
to cold and its just not the same. It's worth the extra time to
use the oven broiler.

As I reflect on my days off, all I can think of is a comb-over that
I saw, while shopping. The hair went directly from the back to the
front and then curled slightly under at the ends. No jokey.
> On Thanksgiving day, I ate the following: Ham, Turkey, Green
Bean Casserole, Homemade Cranberry Sauce, Rolls, Cornbread Stuffing,
Sweet Potatoes with Cinnamon/Honey/Butter Sauce, Bread Pudding with
Bourbon Sauce and Pumpkin Pie. For an appetizer, I made Cranberry
Brie Bites and those were yummy too. The recipe calls for 1
puff pastry sheet, but all i could find on our grocery run, was
puff pastry shells. They still were tasty but with the shells, it
was more like turnovers than 'bites.' I had never baked puff pastry,
much less eaten it right out of the oven....that is some heavenly
goods. Thanksgiving morning, I made the cranberry scones from Cooking
Light. It was a cranlicious day.
> The next winter-time dish that I've always wanted to make is
chicken pot pie in individual ramekins. I need to pick up some ramekins
and i can see some puff pastry making another appearance.
> It's terrific to have some time off just to hang at home and
relax.
