OCTOBER 2005
Tuesday,
October 25, 2005 -- We're back from not-very-sunny San Diego.
It was a lovely trip, as a visit to San Diego always is...there
was old friends, a tiny bundle of baby to hold, the zoo, art, the
aquarium, thai chicken, churros at the zoo, the beach, some bacon,
a cozy fire, a swami garden, and a few cafe mochas. Wonderful times,
indeed.

Snail and I were married 1 year ago as of last Sunday---but who
cares cause tomorrow is our
10 year anniversary
of calling each other 'sweetie' and 'stupid.'
The story goes that Snail and I had been hanging out casually with
his friends (I didn't have any yet, having just moved to town) for
about 2 months. One evening, maybe one of the first ones we were
alone, I commented that we should stop for food cause I was hungry.
We went to this little italian restaurant and when it came time
to order Snail said, "I'm not hungry."
Well, you can imagine that I was led to believe that he WAS hungry
since he said we could go eat. I mean, why sit down to eat if one
of you isn't hungry?
i brought this to his attention and i think he said something like
'who cares' and 'what's your problem? eat your dinner.'
Honestly, i don't think i consciously knew how much I liked him
until the point was made that i wanted very much to share a meal
with this person that I was still getting to know. Looking back
on it, it sounds silly to not "know" but at that time,
I was pretty overwhelmed with having just moved across the country
and trying to find my way in a new place. Meeting
a husband was no where on my list of things to do.
The last part of this story goes that somewhere between him not
eating and us driving in the car afterwards, I realized that I liked
Snail more than just friends, and I told him so.
He was agreeable, thank goodness, because i would be miserable without
him and i would probably be wearing some ugly shoes.
Monday,
October 17, 2005 -- Nothing happened today. Tomorrow is tomorrow
and wednesday we leave town for the sunny shores of San Diego. There
will be birthdays, babies and anniversaries to celebrate!

Thursday,
October 13, 2005 -- I
applied for a hipster/artsy art/craft December bazaar and got my
letter of rejection today. I'm bummed, what can I say?!?! You're
reading the website of girl left holding a big wet bag of painted
dreams.

Tuesday,
October 11, 2005 -- The longer i'm away from sleepypie, the
more I forget what i'm supposed to do when I get back. Thankfully,
i have some items to report on, after having left the house over
the weekend.
We
took part in FANTASTIC FEST,
a local theater's weekend long showing of sci-fi and horror films.
First, was the "Making of Narnia" which involved hearing
a special effects guy discuss make-up, character creation and costumes.
He had a slide show. I don't know the story of Narnia, but I always
enjoy hearing someone undertake the creative process, and more specifically,
trying to get your team on board. He was a good speaker. Can't tell
if it will be a good film, cause its looking like a more polite
version of LoTR, which isn't a complement. We'll see.
Fast forward to 11:40pm that evening with the world premiere of
Feast, the project
greenlight film. You are all very proud. I went to a movie that
started at 11:40pm.
I admit that when Snail first told me he had bought tickets for
11:40pm, I was thinking he had lost his mind, but i didn't tell
him that. After all, i can play it cool, right? I mean, is it wise
to constantly remind my husband how lame i truly am? no. not a good
idea. That day, i DID learn that the director and writers would
be there and then it made sense to attend at that hour in order
to partake in the b-celebrity excitement.
With a Dr. Pepper and some awful fries, we watched and enjoyed.
I totally got my horror film fix and there was no worry about falling
asleepypie to blood, screaming and gore.

The
next day was a screening of Strings
(above), a 2004 film acted out entirely by marionettes. The strings
are part of the story in this film which works in an unexpected
way -- The "head string" being the one that ends your
life. You should see the part where a wooden child is born.... Anyway,
the visual direction was beautiful (true with so many films) but
the story was moving a little slow and the marionettes have no facial
expressions (other than eye blinking) and at times, there was just
no feeling there...even though they did a darn good job with the
whole thing. -- and so, we left about 45 minutes into it and went
to a friends' house to watch Silent
Rage, a 1982 horror film starring Chuck Norris.
Now, THERE's an enjoyable evening. Perfect bad movie entertainment.
But, that's its not over yet......Before the viewing of Strings,
we saw a short film called MoonGirl.
(A sneak peek is available at that link -- Go Now!)

Moongirl was dreamy and delicious. Its animated and the texture
is like watercolor and the feeling is glowy. The story is precious.
That alone, was worth my $8.00.
I mentioned in passing that we saw Corpse Bride. Its always refeshing
to see something out there that has a specific color palette (what
i'm always striving for in my artwork), than your run of the mill
disney or pixar stuff. It lends way to something more subtle and
delicate and ultimately "dialed-in" as I always like to
say.

I
am certain this concludes the october movie report.
Tomorrow night i'm seeing In Her Shoes with a friend and i doubt
there will be much to report there.

Wednesday,
October 5, 2005 -- This is the month of October, right? and
after October comes November. And after November is the month that
Christmas lives in ? It always sneaks up on me.
Because i have been away for so long, I haven't told you about my
first experiences with phyllo dough. It started in a random fashion
which is NOT how i like to bake. I am not one to "wing it."
Rather than take you through the long story, i'll just say that
I ended up in the kitchen post-dinner with some chopped apples and
some phyllo ready to create a dessert of some kind. I used the recipe
on the box as a guide and starting building a flat tart. I wasn't
sure if it would cook right or come out at all.

But
i had bought my first shaker for the sugar and as long as I got
to use it, I didn't much care what I was putting it on.
What i'm here to say is the i've seen the pastry light. I am converted.
Pie crust is like a wet dog next to this flaky, crispy genius of
flour.
The very next night, during Monday Night Football at 8pm, we decided
that we should make another one....this time with our beloved Zergut
Sour Cherries.
Like
I already said, this is it. This is the end of the dessert road
for me. I forsake chocolate, doughnuts, cookies, candy bars, brown
cow yogurt, for this. The crispy bottom with the cherries (or whatever)
on top is perfection. Also, since the cherries aren't sweet, its
all the lovelier.
This brings me to what thankfully reminded me to tell you about
the phyllo......and that is this Bacon
Baklava recipe. (Snail, cover your eyes man!!! save yourself!!!!)
Oh
my.

Monday,
October 3, 2005 -- Holy crap, i can't seem to get off the computer
and yet, when i'm on it, it seems that i'm not posting anything.
Tomorrow, a deadline i've been working toward will be done. I am
going to spend the remaining evenings of this week sitting on my
ass doing nothing nothing and some more nothing. Good-bye.
Oh, saw CORPSE BRIDE over the weekend. Nice stuff!
