ARCHIVES : OCTOBER

> Over the weekend, we were at antique store and saw some 3/4" toy monkeys in the display case. They were each about $300. They both had hard bodies, with fur and moveable arms and feet. The tag on one of them said lipstick/compact. Clearly, you could see that the head was removable and the body had a vertical seam where it opened. Because they were so pricey and the openings didn't give way easily, we weren't able to open the monkey up. I found some of these items on ebay...they were made by a german company, Schuco, in the 50s. From what I can tell on ebay, they mainly make tin cars and other stuffed animals. There also some wind-up clowns that are super neat.

> If you hate going to the mall, its probably related to not obeying one of my
10 Simple Rules of Mall Shopping:
1. Never shop in uncomfortable shoes.
2. Never shop while hungry.
3. Never shop while thirsty.
4. Never shop while needing to blow your nose. (always carry tissue in your purse) 5. Never shop without gum. Gum is good for when your mouth is dry, but you're in a long line and you just can't get to the food court fast enough.
6. Never think you can do it all in one visit. If you have several things to get, its best to break it up into short trips. The mall is a BIG place.
7. Never visit the mall on a saturday afternoon at 2:00. It will be packed and you will be miserable. Always visit the mall when they first open or after work during the week. Less people is good.
8. Never shop with someone who doesn't want to be shopping. The mall requires lots of energy and positive shopping vibrations.
9. Never shop in uncomfortable shoes.
10. Never shop in uncomfortable shoes.

> I'm finishing up Halloween cards today. Its a cloudy day.
> We watched a giraffe give birth on the pbs. The giraffe was in captivity. She was walking around the stall with a portion of 2 hooved legs hanging out her rear and then she stood still and stuff just started coming out. And then, a bony gooey giraffe landed with a thud on the ground. That was about a 10ft drop I believe. I had never before imagined an animal giving birth while standing. The baby giraffe is born with gelatinous coverings on their hooves to protect the mother. The jell-o socks quickly wear off once the giraffe starts walking, which happens in less than an hour after birth. The end.

> DAY OF EATING OUT. Saturday morning began with a perfect bowl of oatmeal, served up with individual ramekins of brown suger, raisins, butter and a small pitcher of chilled cream. It was wonderful and a nice match to the rain. I've never ordered oatmeal at a restaurant before, but it was calling to me. "Order me, I'm warm and gooey and only $1.95." Saturday late lunch was an Italian-style pot roast sandwich and a Proscuitto Goat Cheese brick oven Pizza. The evening was finished off with Bread Pudding and Vanilla Bourbon Sauce. Life is oh so sweet.
> I can't wait to have pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. The color of this page is like pie.
> Mmmm.. cranberry sauce.
> Delicious Honey Baked Ham with crusty suger glaze.

> Are there any lipstick colors that anyone can wear?
Find out the answer to this and other important beauty/fashion questions on the InStyle site. I'm pretty sure that sites like this would be of little interest if I didn't sit in front of the computer all day. Lots of things are funny or interesting that otherwise never would be, when you've got time.
> BedHead has cute expensive pjs.
> 2004: I want to go here. I've seen a few of Turrell's peices in museums in DC and in Houston. They are environments of light. There's an installation in Houston that serves as a tunnel (underground) connecting the orginal museum with the newest wing. I love the fact that people HAVE to walk through this peice to get to the other side. Its hard to write about art---so, I'll just leave it at that.

Here are some totally random items:
> Check out the Amelie Kubrick figures at Sweaty Frog. The angry face that she's making is funny and how she's all blocky and the gnome's head is super detailed. We own Special Forces and Planet of the Apes Kubrick figures. I know they make Blair Witch ones too, but i was never into that. Also on this site, i love this clock and the rest of Yoshitomo Nara's stuff.
> I got my Damned Dollie a week or so ago! I ordered Violet.
> Cecily has compiled some nice Halloween links.
> Wallace and Gromit has some new shorts out. I'm interested in buying more videos, but this site seems to only offer a subscription for downloading. The new shorts belong to a new group called Cracking Contraptions. I'll have to look into that a little more and see if i can find videos.

> You can't beat these metal tins from the Container Store for marble magnet set gift-giving. Now, I just need to design some coordinating stickers for the tin and sell the sets for $10/each and then quit my job and make magnets for the rest of my life.
> I looked in the back of my car yesterday and realized that i had 6 jackets on the seat. Its true that I never go anywhere without one; even when its 98 degrees out.
> After seeing gel pens everywhere, I finally truly used one. I got some black envelopes to mail my Halloween cards, and got a white gel pen to address them. Works like a charm!

> I don't have anything new to say tonight. I thought i would share some old art. A couple of years ago, I was inspired to create a diorama based on a neat box I found at the Container Store. The box is wood, with a clear panel on one end for viewing. I have made all of the components for it: a seated lady, a tiled floor, an end table with a vase of flowers, a painting for the wall. I even have spotlights. I just have to put it together. I need to drill some holes for the lighting system. That's the trickiest part of it all -- the wiring. I really love the idea of dioramas. I hope that later in life I will have more time to mess with some where I can build my own boxes.
Note: In case you were wondering, the lady is made of PaperClay. I usually find it at michaels for around $5.00 near the sculpey section. It's workable with water, like clay, but you just let it air dry. You can paint it, sand it, carve it, etc. Very lightweight -- nice for christmas ornaments and magnet art. I've used it for lots of different projects.

Saturday 5:30pm: October 05, 2002
> Here's a bracelet I made with my 'toasted coconut' beads, as i like to call them.
> We went on an artchitectural homes tour today; mostly new construction. Building a home with an art studio is my dream of all dreams. Just tell me what i need to do to get there. I wonder what the people with the cool house are doing right now. Are they using their indoor/outdoor fireplace?

> Last year, I insisted that we buy our pumpkins at the local grass/stone supply place. It's the place where you watch the children playing in the hay bale maze and laugh in slow motion as you each try to find the best pumpkin. You hold hands with your loved one, strolling around in the cool autumn winds while sunlight drizzles through the half barren trees. Then you get out your wallet and pay too much for two oversized squash. This year, I tossed my pumkin right into the cart at the grocery store. $2.99. Wahoo!

Wednesday 8:52pm: October 02, 2002
> Pictures! I made some Marble Magnets, Jack-o-lantern style. They came out great. I designed the faces on the computer and printed them out. Voila!
> I broke down and bought some simple red corduroy fabric to make a purse with. The fabric is nothing special, but I think its fine for a first purse project. I also broke down and bought a SEWING FOR DUMMIES pattern ($12). I'm excited. I probably could have gone without the pattern, but i figured i may learn something from it.
>After the weekend, my site will be all ready for Halloween.
