SUNDAY, AUGUST 28

Last Sunday, a good friend of mine organized an afternoon of embroidery and cake to celebrate her 30th birthday. With some help from Carol of Sublime Stiching, we all arrived to find little patterns with needle and thread, ready to roll. (I improvised a bit on the flowers and the skull.) I have tried some embroidery in the past but was never sure i was doing it "correctly" and Carol pointed out several helpful tips and tricks.

It was quite a nice afteroon, chatting with other gals, being crafty and having cake.

I was inspired (ok, and a little bored ) to start a small project of my own today. Additionally, i was hell bent on learning the french knot, which you can see below, I have mastered!!!! Hurray! Now, whether or not I keep this up, is another question entirely. But I DO hope to finish what I started below.

+ These watermelon carvings (along with other fruits) are nuts!

Hard to believe that August is over and done with.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 27

+ I got sick with a head cold starting Tuesday and spent the last several days in bed. (don't you love when people blog about illness?) Anyway, i was certain beyond certainty that I would be back to my old self today. Most of my symptoms are gone, but I feel dreadfully lethargic, I don't have a new harry potter book to read and what am I going to do all day?

I guess i'm going to nap some...even though I just got up at 11 friggin a m. I don't want to lay around anymore but I don't want to do anything either.

There's a full working week left before we leave for vacation to the Seattle area. The thought of it all makes me tired too.

MONDAY, AUGUST 22

+ For bad movie watching after good mexican eating friday night, our friends brought over Parts: THE CLONUS HORROR (1979), which easily topped all bad movies in recent memory. The tag line: "The only thing they don't use... is the scream" Basically the government has set up a camp of human clones for the purpose of organ parts. As the clones are growing up (lots of slow blinking) and watching training videos, they are being prepared to go to "America." This "America" is the place where the clones go when they are ready. The clones get injected with green stuff and get hung on a meat hook in a plastic bag, in the basement.

I have tried, but you really can't beat a late 70's horror film.

I kinda wish I still had my old Movie Night page still up.

+We ate dinner tonight at PEI WEI and I made some final decisions about their food. I guess that was our 4/5th meal there. I would say that the food there looks better than it tastes and it all looks fantastic. It doesn't taste that bad but when you bite in you're a little let down. The honey-toned interior, strategic lighting and fancy open kitchen is tough competition-- not to mention their luxurious paper napkins. You have to go there for the napkins. I told Snail that I was going to use mine for the rest of the week and he said he would make some shorts out of his. I am no tree hugger but those damn napkins are stupid.

I should note that they offer a gluten free menu.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 21

+ Back problems started about 2 weeks ago. Could it be because I spend 50 hours a week hunched over a computer and 7 hours a week in my car and 16 hours a weekend hunched over painting and the rest of the time on the couch? Nah, probably not related.

+ I was excited to pick up Domino magazine last night but after looking at it, i am not excited. I was hoping it would be a little more down to earth, a little more readymade (except with less stories about how to turn some peice of trash into a light fixture) and a little less of a fancy design mag. It IS called, after all, "The Shopping Magazine for YOUR home."

One of the stories was an office makeover to inspire creativity, featuring the office of creative directors for Banana Republic and COACH. Great but what about my brown cube hole?? How can I spice IT up??

TUESDAY, AUGUST 16

+ Yesterday a plumber had to come out to the house and while he was here, we had him install new faucets in the two bathrooms. Gone are the 20-some year old ones. Holy crap what a difference!! Yeehaw! I had it in my mind to replace those since we purchased our estate, but it just kept getting put off.

I only wish I had picked the new faucets with equal footprints to the old ones. Ahhhh well, at least one of them accidentally worked out nicely and the other one has a stain around it that doesn't look like its coming off.

New faucets!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

MONDAY, AUGUST 15

Translation ----" Tiger and Anteater: Savage Beast. However whenever this small animal called anteater enouters a tiger looking for prey it turns on its back and throws itself on the tiger's neck and pierces its throat with its snout and claws and does not release him until he is dead on that spot."

I bought this book, Histoire Naturelle Des Indes: The Drake Manuscript (the Natuaral History of the Indies), from half price books about a year ago. It's a book of illustrations and captions from 16th century discoverers documenting west indian plants, animals and indian life. I haven't exactly read the introduction, but it seems like something I am lucky to have a copy of.

What i love about this book is everything. It was created for the purpose of record-keeping, so the quality is somewhat amateur and folksy (which is maybe my favorite thing). I love the hand lettering. I love that the animals all look a little bit mean. Grrrrr!!

"Patonne Fish: This is a fish very excellend for eating having the taste of sturgeon and often living in fresh water rivers."

SUNDAY, AUGUST 14

+Get on over to Saelee Oh's gift shop, Lemonade Maid and buy yourself something cute. I'm getting a tshirt if I can borrow snail's paypal account.

+ Friday night, I got to pick the bad movie and I picked BUG (1975). (I have decided that I like late 70's horror films.) "An earthquake releases a strain of mutant cockroaches with the ability to start fires, which proceed to cause destructive chaos in a small town"
You read it right...Cockroaches that start fires with their rear end.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 9

+ I was laughing to myself as I made a lazy dinner-- at the variety of our meal. There was frozen, canned, instant, processed and carbonated.

+ Sunday i was up late reading Harry Potter: Order of the P and last night I was up late playing laser tag. I should probably stay up tonight and do some shots before I turn into a 13 year old.

-----

SUNDAY, AUGUST 7

+ On the menu tonight is cheeseburgers on the grill with homemade potato crisps and cole slaw. For dessert, I have nothing.

Wearing my apron today, i tried AGAIN to make those chewy chocolate cookies with black walnuts for Snail. They came out equally horrible as last time. THIS TIME i followed the directions to the letter and I have decided that the recipe is at fault -- because its obvious that the flavor is off and they are flat as pancakes. The ingredients of these cookies are egg whites, loads of confect. sugar, 1 cup of cocoa, 2tb flour and little else. Shouldn't there be some salt or baking powder? the thing is that they don't taste very sweet and the other thing is that i don't think these cookies have an official name and/or following for which to find another recipe. For now, I give up.

THURSDAY AUGUST 4

+ The American Hostess apron that Snail found and I ordered finally came in the mail today. Its as cute as I knew it would be with the lemon and cherry print and the scalloped edges. I like the more vintagey-retro look of these over the frilly ones at Anthropologie.
I reckon i'll have to do some baking this weekend and break it in. It'll either be another apple pie, snail's favorite cookies that i still haven't made or some bundt cake so that I can use my super cool decorative mini bundt pan.

+ I started the Crest Whitestrips on Tuesday and I think I can see a slight slight difference. Anyway, its the perfect thing to do during my commute cause it has to stay on there for 30 minutes. I haven't yet mustered up the appetite for doing top and bottom sets at once. That's just too much going on in my mouth. I mean, its not hard or anything but its odd and 30 minutes is 30 minutes. you know? So, i reckon it'll take me 2 weeks as opposed to the 7 days that it should.

+If you live in LA, go see the new Dave Cooper work at Billy Shire Fine arts. I seriously love this stuff. It's hazy and glowy and fun and all that.

+ ok, back to the Harry Potter grindstone. I'm halfway through.

MONDAY, AUGUST 1

+ I have put in my blog hours for the night. Time to go water the dogs, feed the kids, milk the cows and hit the sack.
