ARCHIVE MAY 2010

Monday May 31

Hope you had a great Memorial day weekend. We just got in from my mother-in-law's retirement/memorial day party. We had all the perfect foods for the occasion - corn on the cob, hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, macaroni salad, watermelon and more.

I have been off for an entire week-long staycation! It has been wonderful. Don't underestimate the power of being home. Here's what I did while I was off: painted (while listening to audio books), enjoyed some leisurely breakfasts, read, played a little wii, baked, roller-skated, cleaned out the pantry, played at the pitch and putt, made a great dinner with friends (fried fish tacos), watched MOON, etc.

Before I close out May, I wanted to capture this brownie recipe that I made. I am shipping them out to my dad for his birthday. They are excellent brownies - exactly moist and the right flavor.

Ready or not, here comes June.

I think my new tape dispenser makes friends or enemies. It demands to be loved or hated. Which is it going to be?!?!?

It arrived today from RetroDaisyGirl and I am proud to call it mine.

I am forever trying to get things done and I typically rely on my trusty moleskine to do the job, which I adore. It's fun to make a quick list with checkboxes and scratch them out.

However, sometimes I have long-running lists like "Sewing Projects" that spans weeks or years and I haven't figured out a good way to carry paper lists like that over a period of time. To compensate, I use google email drafts for a whole bunch of junk! It's great but not the cleanest way to run a list.

I thought there must be a list tool out there right? And I'm right. It's called "Ta-da." There is nothing sophisticated about it (which has its pros and cons) but for now I am giving it a serious try.

To encourage use and my memory, I added it to my bookmarks toolbar!

Sunday May 16

I'm on the hunt for some casual sneakers and came across these on Zappos. At first I thought they were 100% ridiculous but they are growing on me... But I'm not sure. I'm just not sure.

(can't find the link to them...sorry)

Check out these photos by Andrew Bush of people driving in their cars. What a great collection of images. Love it. (link found at beachbungalow8 )

Thursday May 6

A Story.

I came home from work and crawled in to bed to read. It had been many nights, since we had been home and I wasn't about to DO anything.

Adam was making dinner and the savory smells of food were lazily finding their way to me. I guess that's when I heard Adam scream. Screaming and then running down the hall to the doorway.

"There's a bat!!!"

It seems that while Adam was cooking on the stove, a bat flew down from the overhead microwave/cabinet area and flopped down onto the counter -- Right by where he was standing.

We creep down the hallway and peer delicately around the corner to see where our friend has ended up. He was nestled on the counter, right up against the side of the fridge. A very tiny little dark bundle.

He wasn't moving much but considering rabies, we opt for a solid plan for removing the bat. While Adam kept an eye on him, I run out to the garage to see what I can find to trap him with.

I have a swiffer, masking tape and an unused plastic coffee filter.

Adam holds the stick out, with the basket/filter pointing downwards and traps the bat underneath. A few quick movements and the bat is crawling around on the grass in our backyard.

Whew! Lots of excitement for a Thursday night. And a great story to tell for years to come. And as good of a story as it may be, I think I still win the award for 'most unpleasant wild animal encounter' because after all, he did not come in direct contact with the bat.

It was I who had a roach up my pants. Directly on my thigh. I win.

Do you like to read and are you using GoodReads? I signed up a few months ago. I find the interface to be a little confusing at times, but the benefits are worthwhile.
I like:
1. Having an inventory of all the books I have read. You can write reviews on them too and post those.
2. You can participate in book swaps. If put on your book inventory that you own a book, another member can pay for you to sent it to them. It works quite simply - they pay and you print the post office shipping label and drop it in the mail. I haven't yet recieved any books - only shipped. Magical.
3. You can participate in book discussions. If you're like me, none of your friends read the same books as you. Sounds lonely, right?? NOT any more...
4. You can participate in a book club. Well, a virtual book club, that is. The fun never ends.

Enjoy!

April was a damn fine month..
